Oxyfluoropolymers Having Chemically Reactive Surface Functionality and Increased Surface Energies

The surface of fluoropolymers has been treated in such a way as to confer certain reactivities while retaining hydrophobicity. The uses are myriad and include: preparing the surface to receive metal, ceramic or plastic coating; attachment of biomolecules with preferential retention of orientation; sequestering monoclonal antibodies so as to render them impervious to chaotropic agents; covalent attachment of enzymes. The latter two mentioned uses can provide immunosensors for any analyte to which an appropriate antibody has been developed or which is an enzyme substrate. One US Patent has issued; the second has been allowed; a third is under preparation and will co-pend with the second.
